Open Streets Minneapolis season begins in June and brings us all the way into October. In these five months the City of Minneapolis is given the unique opportunity to envision our streets in a whole new way: without motorized vehicles and with pedestrians, bicyclists, skaters, local vendors, artists, and many more. For one glorious day, a typically busy and chaotic street is filled with chalk, bubbles, and free movement of people; it’s the one day a year that communities can see their streets in a whole new way.

Reflecting on a week of tragic shootings

This week we are rocked and mourning like everyone from the tragic deaths of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, police officers in Dallas, and two-year-old Le’Vonte Jones in Minneapolis. This comes on the heels of the Pulse shooting in Orlando just a few weeks ago. It's been a hard month. These impact all of us, but especially queer and Latinx community members, black community members, Muslim community members facing increasing Islamophobia, and police officers.
